Have Fun in the Sun but Take Care
As over two million people head overseas this Easter, in what is traditionally a curtain raiser to the summer, ABTA reminds holidaymakers to have fun in the sun but take care and endorses this year’s Cancer Research UK 'sunsmart' campaign

ABTA’s own leaflet: ‘How to Have a Safe and Healthy Holiday’ outlines the top tips for care in the sun:

• Build up the time you spend in the sun gradually.

• Avoid sunbathing between 11am and 3pm.

• Apply high factor sunscreen and re-apply frequently.

• Never expose babies under 6 months to the sun and always take extra care with children.

• Remember, it’s possible to burn in the shade, when it’s cloudy and while swimming

• At the first sign of burning get out of the sun immediately.

• Always drink plenty of water.

Nikki White, ABTA’s Head of Destinations & Sustainability said: “While warm weather helps us to relax and enjoy the outside life, and while there are medical benefits to moderate amounts of sun we need to take care of ourselves and our children in the sun to prevent short term hazards such as dehydration, sun stroke and sunburn and to prevent skin cancer.”

Notes to Editors
ABTA – The Travel Association was founded in 1950 and currently has 1,351 members with 5,700 outlets. Members include travel agents, tour operators and support services right across the spectrum from small family-owned businesses to the largest tour operators.

ABTA is the largest travel association in the UK and its members provide 90% of the foreign package holidays in the UK as well as selling millions of independent travel arrangements.

In 2008 ABTA merged with the Federation of Tour Operators [FTO], thereby cementing its role as the leading travel association and increasing benefits for both ABTA and FTO members. Both the ABTA brand which is highly recognised by consumers and the FTO brand which is well known in destinations will be retained.

As part of its comprehensive package of services to members, ABTA, as a non-party political organisation works to represent the interests of its Members to government and key opinion formers in the UK and EU.
